In addition to the National Curriculum core and foundation subjects all pupils at RCPS also follow a Deaf Studies curriculum.
The scheme of work outlines the knowledge and skills that must be covered within each of three age groups (4-7 yrs; 7-9 yrs and 9-11 yrs). It also identifies indicators of the attitudes and beliefs which pupils should develop to fulfil our mission statement
“RCPS is a learning environment which develop children’s potential and self esteem by providing access to appropriate communication”
The scheme was developed by a specially formed working group with representation from teaching staff, Deaf Learning Support Assistants and Deaf/hearing governors.
Some aspects are delivered within the PSHE framework of theme days. Other aspects are covered within language, history and integration.
Both teaching staff and Deaf Learning Support Assistants have a role in curriculum delivery. The provision of theme days allows flexible use of Deaf staff within the school to ensure all Deaf pupils have direct access to Deaf adult role models throughout the school. Deaf visitors are also invited into school as and when appropriate. This provides pupils with the opportunity to see Deaf people fulfilling a variety of roles.
Individual pupil attainment records outline the development of skills and knowledge and are also used to record evidence of attitudes and beliefs. The Integration Record documents pupils’ experience and significant learning outcomes.
