Formal letters are to people you don't know well.

Write your address.

Greeting:

Use Mr, Mrs, Ms or Miss and their surname.

Dear Mr Smith,

Use Sir or Madam if you don't know their name.

Dear Sir or Madam,

First paragraph Say what the letter is about
  • to complain about something
  • to give instructions
  • to pursuade
  • to say what you did
  • to explain something
Middle
  • Give more information
  • Order the information well
Last paragraph:
  • Say again what the letter is about
  • Say what you want
Ending:

When the greeting uses a name write:

Yours sincerely,

When the greeting is Sir or Madam write:

Yours faithfully

Write your signature or full name.
