Teaching deaf children to read 1

The task of learning to read for deaf pupils can differ considerably from their hearing peers as they are learning to understand English at the same time as learning to read it.  For many deaf pupils this is within the context of a Sign Bilingual approach.  Care is needed to ensure that pupils truly learn to read for meaning rather than just signing or speaking a string of ‘meaningless’ words. These reading materials have been developed and successfully used to meet the needs of such pupils.

Reading and understanding even the simplest books demands that pupils’ language has developed to quite a sophisticated level.  For example most reading scheme books involve full sentences including past or present tense as well as use of features such as pronouns (he, she) which require the reader to look back at a previous sentence to fully understand the meaning of the text.
