Teaching deaf children to read 2

The Cliff Moon Individualised Reading Scheme includes the full range of materials required by the National Curriculum.  It incorporates books from a number of widely used reading schemes and real books, thus providing the children with more choice about what they read as each stage includes a wide range of books.

Central to the approach is ensuring that pupils both expect and experience reading to be a meaningful activity.

It therefore begins by

  • using picture books (stage 0 or red) to develop pupil’s language, understanding of stories and extend their vocabulary

  • introducing pupils to reading through writing which ensures they understand the language structures within the text so they can approach reading with the expectation that it should be meaningful to them. They write their own versions of the picture book stories as well as other writing activities.

Text is introduced from the second stage (yellow) of the reading scheme.  However, we also selected some books with very repetitive phrases and labelled them red/yellow to bridge between the two stages.

The books in the early stages contain clear pictures with short repetitive sentences.  These books are used along side reading games and activities.  By the time pupils move on to the fifth stage (brown) their language and vocabulary has developed enough for them to read and understand simple stories and information books.
