Teaching deaf children to read 5

Signs in Context

Emphasis is also given to expanding the children's understanding of words which have different meanings in different contexts.  There are two main types

  • words that have more than one meaning and would therefore need a different sign depending on the context in which it is used eg 'I like your coat' or 'I have a coat like that'.

  • phrases including English function words eg in, on, up, to in sentences such as 'The man went up to the policeman', 'The car went up the road'.

At each level of the scheme children are expected to demonstrate understanding of a word in different contexts by signing or drawing.  'Signs in Context' materials are used alongside to develop this aspect of the children's' understanding of English eg Sentence Flash Cards and drawing activities within the Activity Packs.

Much of the emphasis at Stage 5  is on consolidating understanding of common 'Signs in Context' and a language profile is included to record this.  For children in bilingual programmes some aspects of this often need to be specifically taught such phrases.  They are then expected to their modify signing to reflect the overall meaning of the text.
