Polar

The North and South Poles

The Polar regions are near the North Pole and the South Pole. 

Polar regions are very cold.  They are covered in snow and ice.  Some ice is 3000 metres thick.

The sun is low in the sky.  Polar regions have 6 months of daylight and 6 months of darkness. 

Thermometers showing less than 70°C to 10°C

The temperature is usually below 0°C. The warmest month is only 10°C.
A map showing Alaska, Greenland and Siberia Northern Europe, Asia and North America are polar regions.  

The people in Alaska, Greenland and Siberia are called Inuits. 

 

Polar bears live at the North Pole

Polar Bears live around the North Pole.
Penguins live at the South Pole Antarctica is around the South Pole.  It is very cold here.  The temperature was -88°C once!

 

Antarctica

No people live here all the time.  Scientists work here.  They live underground.  

Penguins live in Antarctica.
