'Deaf and Dumb'

In the past the word 'Dumb' meant 'no speech'.

The word 'Dumb' has been scratched off the building

Lots of words had different meanings in the past.

Today the word 'dumb' has a different meaning too.  Sometimes it means 'stupid'.

Calling a person 'Deaf and Dumb' today is rude.

The word 'Deaf' is used today. 

Some people prefer to be called 'Hearing Impaired'.
People who go deaf after they have learnt to talk are called 'Deafened'.  Old people who go deaf are sometimes called 'Hard of Hearing'.
