The Spanish Armada

Elizabeth I made England a Protestant country.  Many Catholic people were killed.  King Phillip II of Spain was angry.  English ships were stealing from Spanish boats. In 1588 Spain sent 130 ships to England.  A group of ships was called an armada.  The ships would take 30,000 soldiers to England.  They wanted to make England catholic again. Sir Francis Drake fought the ships near Plymouth.  At night Drake set fire to 8 boats.  The Spanish were frightened.  They sailed away. The Spanish boats went north up to Scotland.  The sea was rough.  Many boats sank.  Only 60 boats got back to Spain. England had won the war. Back
